Here’s why my cookie mix in a jar recipe is the best! This recipe layers the ingredients in the jar in an order that allows the cookie dough to be made properly, which means creaming softened butter with the sugars, before combining with the flour and mix-ins.

Why You’ll Love this DIY Valentine Cookie Mix in a Jar

Easy homemade gift – Making this mason jar gift is as simple as measuring dry cookie mix ingredients and layering them in a jar.

Mostly pantry ingredients – You’ll need to grab a bag of Cupid M&M’s (plain) and chocolate chips, but chances are you already have the rest of the basic pantry ingredients on-hand.

Making two gift jars is as easy as making one. A 12-ounce bag of Cupid M&M’s and bag of chocolate chips has enough to make two cookie mix jars. You could give them both as gifts or keep one for you and your family.

Free printable gift tags – All my mason jar mix recipes come with free printable gift tags that you can download instantly. The Valentine cookie mix tags include the baking instructions for the gift recipient and come in several different designs.

Valentine Cookie Mix Ingredients

This cookie mix fits in a standard one-quart mason jar. It’s filled to the brim so be sure your jar has at least a one-quart capacity.

Here’s what you need to make the dry cookie mix.

  • flour
  • baking soda
  • salt
  • light brown sugar
  • granulated sugar
  • semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • Cupid Valentine M&Ms (plain milk chocolate)

Other supplies you need:

  • One-Quart Mason Jar – Preferably use a wide mouth jar. It’s easier to reach into to pack down the flour and sugar layers.
  • Paper Muffin Tin Liners (optional) – To keep the jar looking tidy, I like to flatten out and trim paper muffin tin liners to put on top of the flour and granulated sugar layers.
  • Clear Bag with Twist Tie (optional) – The chocolate and candies get mixed into the cookie dough last, so it’s a nice touch to put them in a bag that the gift recipient can pull out and set aside.
  • Canning Funnel (optional) – Filling the jar is easier and neater (especially the flour) with a canning funnel. I love my canning funnel because it fits both wide and regular-mouth mason jars and doesn’t wiggle around like a standard funnel.
  • Rubber Spatula and Small Juice Glass – I use these objects to pack down and level each layer, and to scrape the sides of the jar before adding the next ingredient layer.
  • Gift Tag (see below for free printable gift tags) – The gift tag lists the additional ingredients and instructions needed to make the cookies.
  • Ribbon and Decorative Paper (optional) – Decorate your mason jar gift with ribbon, string, paper, fabric and more.

Steps to Make Valentine Cookie Mix in a Jar

Be sure to pack each layer down as much as possible so it fits into a one-quart mason jar.

Detailed recipe and instructions are in recipe card at bottom of post.

  1. In a small bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda and salt. Add flour mixture to bottom of mason jar. Level the flour layer using a small rubber spatula and scrape down any flour that got on the inside of the jar. Using the bottom of a small juice glass (or other flat object), reach in and gently pack down the flour and level again. Trim a paper muffin tin liner to fit in the jar and place on top of the flour. Using the flat object again, pack down the flour as much as possible.
  2. Add brown sugar and pack it down just as you did the flour layer. When the brown sugar is packed and level, add the granulated sugar directly on top of the brown sugar. Level and pack down the white sugar, then top it with a muffin tin liner trimmed to fit inside the jar. Using the juice glass (or other flat object) pack the sugar down again by pressing against the paper liner.
  3. Add the Valentine M&M’s and chocolate chips to a clear bag with twist tie and place in the jar. You can also place the candy directly in the jar. (The bag simply makes it easier for the gift recipient to remove them and set aside as they are the last thing to get mixed into the cookie dough.)
  4. Decorate the lid if desired and add a printable gift tag that includes additional ingredients needed and baking instructions.

Valentine Cookie Mix Layers

This cookie mix is layered in a mason jar in an order that makes it easy for the gift recipient to make the dough properly.

Layer 1: Flour, baking soda and salt (bottom of jar)
Layer 2: Brown Sugar
Layer 3: Granulated Sugar
Layer 4: Bag with Valentine M&M’s and chocolate chips

Tips for Making the Best Mason Jar Cookie Mix

Making more than one gift jar? Combine the flour, baking soda and salt separately separately for each gift jar. (This way each jar has the correct amount of baking soda and salt.)

Use muffin tin liners as separators between layers. To keep things neat, place a flattened muffin tin liner on top of the flour layer.

It also makes it easier to pack down the layer when you press against the liner.

Add a liner between the granulated sugar and baggie of mix-ins, as well. This way sugar doesn’t get stuck to the bag when it’s removed from the jar.

Always put flour on bottom of jar. This prevents flour from seeping into other layers.

Put candy mix-ins in a clear baggie. Chocolate chips and M&M’s are the last thing to get mixed into the cookie dough. So I think it’s a nice touch to make it easy for the gift recipient to remove them from the jar to set aside.

Instructions

To Make Valentine Cookie Mix in a Jar

  3. Add the Valentine M&M's and chocolate chips to a clear bag with twist tie and place in the jar.

To Make the Cookies

  1. Pre-heat oven to 375°F. Remove M&M candies and chocolate chip morsels from jar and set aside.
  2. In a medium bowl, beat butter, vanilla extract, granulated sugar and brown sugar until creamy. Gradually beat in flour mixture. Stir in candy and chocolate mix-ins.
  3. Drop by rounded tablespoon onto ungreased baking sheets. Bake 9-11 minutes. Cool on sheets for 2 minutes; remove to wire rack to cool completely. Makes about 2 dozen cookies.
