Greek Mason Jar Salad Recipe

This recipe has two parts: the salad and the dressing. You will need four quart-size mason jars.

Salad Ingredients

Traditional Greek Salad ingredients chopped and in small bowls.
This simple salad in a jar recipe features traditional Greek salad ingredients.

Romaine Lettuce – A crisp, sturdy green that makes a nice bed for the rest of the Greek salad components.

Feta Cheese – Authentic Greek salads often come with a single chunk of feta on top. However, crumbled feta is best for jar salads.

Kalamata Olives – I don’t think you could call it a Greek salad without olives. Get a jar of pitted Kalamata.

Red Onion – This sweet and tangy onion is a must for Greek salads! It also adds a nice pop of color.

English Cucumber – No need to peel this thinner skinned cucumber that also has less seeds than a regular one.

Green Bell Pepper – Go for a green pepper when making a traditional Greek salad (not yellow, orange or red).

Grape Tomatoes – Cut them in half or slice a large tomato into wedges. I prefer grape or cherry tomatoes for mason jar salads.

Chicken – Turn your Greek salad into a meal with a protein like chicken. Chickpeas are another option.

Dressing Ingredients

Greek Salad Dressing is a vinaigrette with olive oil, red wine vinegar, oregano and minced garlic.

Additionally, salt may be added to taste. I’ve been known to add a splash of the salty liquid from the olive jar instead.

Vinaigrettes are normally a 3 to 1 ratio of oil to vinegar, which is how I make this dressing. However, you may adjust the ratio to your preference.

To emulsify the dressing, just whisk it or use my favorite method–shake it vigorously in a small mason jar.

How to Make Greek Salad in a Mason Jar

There are 3 steps to make Greek salad in a jar: make the dressing, prep the veggies, layer the salad in the jar.

The goal is to layer the salad in a jar in a way that keeps the greens from wilting and the salad as crisp as possible. This is why I like to chop the veggies into fairly thick pieces.

Basic order salad components go into the jar:

  • Put the dressing into the jar first.
  • Work your way up from hard veggies to soft veggies and other ingredients.
  • Greens should be the last layer and should rest on top of a fairly dry ingredient.

Best Size Mason Jar for Salads

A quart size mason jar with a wide mouth is the best size jar for packing lunch and dinner salads into.

These 32-ounce jars are ideal for salads with lots of chopped veggies, toppings and greens, like a Greek salad.

To avoid spills, swap out standard mason jar lids and rings for leakproof lids.

My Favorite Mason Jar Lid

I love these leak-proof mason jar lids, especially for salads. They come in wide and regular mouth and are easier to clean than the typical bands and lids.

How Long Do Mason Jar Salads Last?

Mason jar salads last up to 3-5 days when stored in the refrigerator.

Make it with the freshest ingredients, for the longest-lasting salad.

Typically, I prepare no more than four salad jars at a time when there’s meat protein in it, like chicken.
