Chocolate Chip Cookie Mix Ingredients
This list of ingredients is what you add to the jar to make the cookie mix.
- All-Purpose Flour
- Baking Soda
- Salt
- Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips
- Light Brown Sugar
- Granulated Sugar
To make the chocolate chip cookies, the recipient of the jar needs to combine the mix with butter, egg and vanilla extract.
Chocolate Chips: My go-to brand of chocolate chips for cookies is Nestles, but use your favorite. I do, however, recommend using semi-sweet morsels and not milk chocolate since the recipe also contains lots of sugar.
Flour: This cookie recipe specifically calls for all-purpose flour. I do not suggest substituting it, but if you do, you may need to change the baking instructions for your gift recipient.
For instance, cookies made with almond flour may need more egg.
And oat flour may not fit in the one-quart mason jar since the ratio of substituting oat for all-purpose exceeds 1:1.
Sugars: A combination of brown sugar and white granulated sugar is key to making perfectly chewy chocolate chip cookies.
Serious Eats explains, white sugar contributes to the cookie’s puffiness, and brown sugar keeps it moist and chewy.
So should you use dark brown or light brown sugar?
For classic chocolate chip cookies, opt for light brown. Dark brown sugar has a stronger flavor of molasses which isn’t what we’re aiming for.
How to Layer the Chocolate Chip Cookie Mix in a Jar
This cookie mix recipe fills a one-quart jar. It’s important to pack down layers as instructed below so the mix fits perfectly in the jar.
- In a small bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda and salt.
- Using a funnel, add the flour mixture to a 1 quart wide mouth mason jar. Firmly pack down the flour. Carefully scrape edges of flour with a small rubber spatula to create a straight line.
- Add the chocolate chips to the jar. Carefully pack down without disturbing the flour.
- Layer firmly packed brown sugar on top of chocolate chips. Pour granulated sugar directly on brown sugar.
Detailed recipe and instructions are in recipe card at bottom of post.
Cookie Mix Layers:
Layer 1: Flour Mixture (bottom of jar)
Layer 2: Chocolate Chips
Layer 3: Brown Sugar
Layer 4: Granulated Sugar (top of jar)
Tip: Add a separator between layers 1 and 2; and layers 2 and 3. This keeps the layers nicely separated and makes it easier to remove the ingredients in groups for baking.
My Funnel Pick
This is my favorite canning funnel for making cookie mixes in jars! It fits regular and wide mouth mason jars and doesn’t wiggle around like a typical funnel.

Expert Tips for Assembling this Mason Jar Cookie Recipe
Making multiple jars of cookie mix:
If making more than one recipe at a time, don’t multiply the flour mixture in one bowl.
Instead, mix each batch of flour, salt and baking soda separately. This ensures each chocolate chip cookie mix has the exact amount of each ingredient.
Fitting the ingredients in the jar:
Ideally, use a wide mouth jar so you can easily reach inside the jar to pack down each layer.
The easiest and neatest way to get the ingredients in the jar (especially the flour) is to use a canning funnel.
If you don’t have a funnel, roll a clean piece of paper, wax paper or parchment paper into a cone and insert it into the jar.
Gently dust or wipe the inside of jar before adding the next layer. Flour usually is the biggest culprit.
Assembling a neatly-layered jar of cookie mix:
Pack the layers as directed so all the ingredients fit in the mason jar.
Ideally, the cookie mix should fill the entire jar. The goal is, not too much, not too little.
Additionally, I like to add separators between some layers so one layer of ingredients doesn’t mix into another.
A flattened paper muffin tin liner that’s trimmed to fit in the jar, works perfectly.
The liners also divide the ingredients so portions can be removed at a time to make the cookies.
