Steps to Make Christmas Cookie Mix in a Jar
This cookie mix in a jar recipe fits exactly in a one-quart mason jar.
It’s important to pack down the flour and brown sugar layers as instructed below so the mix fits perfectly.
Detailed recipe and instructions are in recipe card at bottom of post.
- In a small bowl, combine flour, baking soda and salt. Using a canning funnel, add this mixture to the bottom of a 1 quart jar. Pack the layer down until it’s firm. (I use the bottom of a small glass to reach in the jar and press it down.) Scrape any flour off the inside of the jar with a rubber spatula for a tidy presentation. I also use a rubber spatula to give my flour a straight line around the edges.
- Add a paper muffin tin liner trimmed to size on top of the flour layer (optional).
- Add the brown sugar to the jar. Be sure to pack the brown sugar when measuring it and then pack it down in the jar.
- Pour the white sugar on top of the firm brown sugar layer. Level the white sugar by gently sliding the jar back and forth between your hands on the counter.
- Add a paper muffin tin liner trimmed to size on top of the sugar layer (optional).
- Add the cookie mix-ins to the jar. I like to combine the chocolate chips and m&ms in a clear bag, so the gift recipient can easily remove them since they are the last ingredient to mix in the dough. Alternatively, add the m&ms directly to the jar followed by the chocolate chip morsels.
- Put lid on the mason jar and tie on a gift tag with baking instructions for the gift recipient.
Use the fluff, scoop, level method to measure the flour properly! This way the cookies taste delicious and you’re not adding too much flour to the jar! First, fluff the flour with a fork so it’s light and airy. Then, scoop the flour into a measuring cup using a spoon. (It’s a no-no to use the measuring cup like a scoop.) Finally, level the flour with the straight side of a knife.
Christmas Cookie Mix Layers
Please Note: This cookie mix is layered in the jar in an order that makes it easy for the gift recipient to make the dough properly.
Layer 1: Flour Mixture (bottom of jar)
Layer 2: Brown Sugar
Layer 3: Granulated Sugar
Layer 4: Baggie with M&Ms and Chocolate Chips combined
Tips for Making Cookie Mix in a Jar
When it comes to making mason jar cookie mix gifts, presentation matters, but it’s just as important to layer all the ingredients in the jar so the gift recipient can easily prepare the cookie dough.
Here are my best tips for accomplishing both objectives:
If you make multiple gift jars, make the flour mixture separately for each jar. This way every gift jar contains the exact amount of baking soda and salt that the recipe calls for.
Flour should always be the bottom layer of the jar. Putting the flour into the jar first prevents it from seeping into other layers. It’s also easier to pack down when nothing is beneath it.
Additionally, when the gift recipient makes the cookie dough, flour is mixed in after the sugars.
Use flattened paper muffin tin liners to separate layers. Not only do separators keep the gift jar tidy, but they also make it easier for the gift recipient to scoop or pour out each ingredient as needed.
Put the mix-ins in a baggie on top. If you’ve made your fair share of homemade chocolate chip cookies, then you know the chocolate morsels and other mix-ins like nuts are folded into the dough at the end.
That’s why I suggest putting the m&ms and chocolate chips in a baggie on top of the jar. The gift recipient can simply pull it out and set them aside.
No matter whether you use a baggie or not, the candy and chocolate should be the top layers in the jar so sugar or other ingredients can’t seep into the spaces between the morsels.
